Lisbon weather is classified as subtropical Mediterranean, and it is generally believed to be the warmest amongst all European capital cities. A distinct feature of Lisbon weather is its particularly short mild winters and long hot summers, which along with the abundant amount of sunshine it enjoys have made the city Portugal's number one tourist destination. On average Lisbon enjoys 4.6 hours of sun per day during December, peaking at 11.4 hours per day in July, and totaling roughly around 2,800 hours annually.
Summer
Summer descents upon Lisbon with the arrival of May and runs all the way through to October, effectively making it a six month long season. Weather in Lisbon during this time enjoys daily average temperatures that hover between 17 °C to 21 °C, dropping slightly to a cool 13 °C in the evenings. During the summer season sea water temperatures average 20 °C making the city’s beaches packed to the brim with visitors and locals alike. August is without doubt the hottest month of the year averaging daily temperatures of between 26 to 32 °C that have the tendency to occasionally rise even higher, while evening temperatures stand at a still warm 18 °C
Winter
Lisbon weather during winter is abundantly sprinkled with mild cool days; typically the season is short lasting only for three months (December, January, and February). Temperatures during the day are around 15.2 °C plummeting to 8.9 °C during the evenings. Due to Lisbon’s approximation to the sea, fog and drizzly rain can occasionally intercept the city’s otherwise fine patterns, make Lisbon feel cooler than inland Portugal. Light rain is most likely to make their presence felt – even if only slightly so –during December and March. Even at its coldest, Lisbon weather rarely experiences temperatures that fall to freezing point.
Three months out of the year (November, March and April) are considered to be transitional periods. All three months are characterized by daily temperatures that reach 18.5 °C but never exceeding 20 °C, and easing to 11.2 °C at night.
